Unnamed #40
Unnamed #40 pattern by Carrie G. Stevens, dressed by Peter Simonson
Pattern Note: The specimen observed at Lang’s Auction website was accompanied by this note: “Tied by the Upper Dam legend Carrie Stevens (1882-1970), and fished by her sister Elizabeth Duley (1879-1960), an important early Maine tyer in her own right. Featuring Stevens' signature black/red/black striped head, this early fly is dressed in what appears to be a custom Smelt variation, with use wear and soiling. Still a decent example in a rare pattern with great provenance, originating from the Duley family.”
